Abstract

BTX (Benzene, Toluene and Xylene) are potentially toxic air pollutants among the volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These are present in the urban atmosphere in both exhaust and evaporative emissions from vehicles and fuel delivery outlets. The present paper gives an account of BTX levels in urban environment of Delhi measured since May 2008 to April 2010. Active sampling technique has been employed for measurements. A significant decrease (from 17.05/58.98/15.45 µg/m3 to 16.00/52.99/14.22 µg/m3 for B/T/X respectively during 2008-2009 and 2009-2010) was observed in the levels in the initial stage but the levels were found higher than the limiting value prescribed by CPCB (i.e. 5 µg/m3- annual average for benzene). This indicates that in the urban atmosphere BTX do not dissipate easily in the environment and therefore, needs serious thought for reduction.
